New York City based urban and landscape design firm, recognized worldwide for its creative interfacing of landscape and architecture.

We are an international urban and landscape design firm. Ms. Diana Balmori founded the company in 1990. Nowadays, the office is now led by partners Noemie Lafaurie-Debany and Javier Gonzalez-Campana. Also we have the support of a multi-disciplinary, multi-lingual team.

So the main tenet of our work is to set up a different type of relationship between ourselves and each of the elements of nature. Such elements as: soil, water, air, plants and animals. We want to change our ways of dealing with them. Furthermore we want to treat them as parts of ourselves. In fact to do this, two sustainable design principles guide us. First to have low-impact. Second. to be regenerative of the sites we work on.

Since 2006 our design studio has been divided in two parts. The first is a landscape practice that investigates landscape as a constructed space. The second part, BAL/LAB, is everything else. For example collaborations across disciplines, exploration of new technologies, projects invented by us. As well as landscape representation, peripheral vision, floating landscape, zero waste city …

Our portfolio includes executed projects at all scales, and award-winning competitions. It has garnered numerous awards for design excellence. In 1998, Balmori Associates’ Master Plan won the international competition for the waterfront development of the Abandoibarra district of Bilbao, Spain. In 2005, we designed the greenroof of Silvercup Studios in Queens, New York. For the moment, this is the largest scientifically monitored green roof in the United States. In 2012 Korean Prime Minister moved from Seoul to Sejong, South Korea new multifunctional administrative city, a zero-waste urban plan designed by us.
