Majorelle Garden is an artist’s landscape garden in Marrakech, Morocco. The French Orientalist artist, Jacques Majorelle created the garden over almost forty years. Jacques started in 1923 and featured a Cubist villa designed by French architect, Paul Sinoir in the 1930s. The property was the residence of the artist and his wife from 1923 until their divorce in the 1950s. In the 1980s,the fashion designers, Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé purchased the garden and worked to restore it.
Today the famous garden and villa complex is open to the public. The villa houses the Islamic Art Museum of Marrakech, the Berber Museum. And has recently opened the Musee Yves Saint Laurent.
The Majorelle Garden (Jardin Majorelle) previously the Jardin Bou Sa is twelve acres in size. It radiates with multi-colored bougainvillea, rows of bright orange nasturtiums, pink geraniums, bold pergolas. As well as concrete paths that exist in shades of pastel pink, lovely lemon and apple green.
We stroll along shady lanes, in the midst of trees and exotic plants of dreamy origin.
We walk past refreshing, burbling streams and pools filled with water lilies and lotus flowers.
So, we hear wafting through the air, laden with sugared fragrance, the rustling of leaves and the chirping of numerous birds who come here to take refuge.
We stop, and the path turns unexpectedly, revealing a building with Moorish charm, with a hint of Art Deco, painted in astonishingly vibrant primary colours.
Further we admire the glowing with an intense blue the artist perceived in the Atlas Mountains.
We are soothed and enchanted by the harmony of this luxuriant and vivid imagery, which issues a delicate summons to the senses.
And last but not least, we feel a calming retreat near, and yet so far from the bustling city, sheltered from time by high earthen walls.
